Schema therapy in psychosocial care – a personal perspective
Abstract:
Abstract: This article offers a personal perspective on the role of Schema Therapy in psychosocial care. Starting from early professional disillusionment with cognitive-behavioral therapy experienced as technically strong yet insufficiently holistic, and a parallel existential orientation shaped by logotherapy and existential psychotherapy, the author describes a later encounter with Schema Therapy as an integrative turning point. Schema Therapy is portrayed as the most comprehensive ‘third-wave’ approach because it links a coherent model of psychopathology with diagnostic reasoning, case conceptualization, a rich intervention repertoire, and an explicit relational stance. Limited reparenting and mode work are highlighted as maturation and ‘rematuration’ mechanisms that connect symptom reduction with personality development. The paper emphasizes Schema Therapy’s integrative capacity, coherently combining CBT, psychodynamic ideas, person-centered relational principles, emotion-focused work, and experiential/gestalt and systemic elements. Finally, its relevance for service delivery is discussed: strong evidence for complex and chronic presentations, expanding applications across disorders, and high attractiveness for early-career therapists as an alternative to a purely tool-based understanding of psychotherapy.
