This book is intended as a guide to the design process of a dialysis centre, and aims to ensure that the best possible environment is created for all treatment related activities, providing comfort and a sense of well-being for patients and staff, whilst ensuring compliance with hygiene standards and technical requirements. Guidance is also offered on how to achieve the most effective work organisation and the optimum use of resources. This book is addressed to architects and project managers responsible for the budgeting, briefing, design and construction of dialysis centres. It is also addressed to anyone interested in learning more about the equipment, architecture, infrastructure and operation of dialysis centres. The ideas presented in this book are the result of the authors’ many years of experience in the design of dialysis centres across Europe, the Middle East and Africa as part of NephroCare, the Fresenius Medical Care service organisation for renal care.
María Merello de Miguel (Barcelona, 1976) is an architect living and working in Germany. She has a proven record of experience and knowledge about the design process of dialysis clinics in many countries. Together with Carlo Boccato, she developed the NephroCare Dialysis Centres Architecture Guideline.
Carlo Boccato (Milan, 1952) is an engineer working on the definition of optimal technical infrastructures for dialysis centres. He is a member of the ISO Working Groups dedicated to the standards for dialysis water, the safe operation of medical equipment in haemodialysis and IT networks incorporating medical devices. He is coauthor of “Environmental Guidelines for Dialysis” (a joint initiative of EDTNA/ERCA/ Fresenius Medical Care aimed at reducing the environmental burden of dialysis treatment).
Guido Giordana (Milan, 1968) is an economist with proven experience in the management of NephroCare dialysis clinics in Italy and France. He currently serves as head of Business Operation Management Europe, Middle East and Africa, Fresenius Medical Care. His activities are focussed on efficient management and health economics modelling, specifically in the international dialysis field.
