Besides transplant rejection infection as a natural consequence of immunosuppression is a most important phenomenon in the practice of organ transplantation. Although the introduction of ciclosporin seems to have lowered the incidence of severe infections obviously, any infection of the immunocompromised host, however, can turn into an unfortunate situation, in particular, when immunosuppression is carried out with azathioprine, high dosis of steroids, and polyclonal or monoclonal antibodies.
Here a major importance falls to the Cytomegalovirus (CMV), because the overall incidence of CMV infections seems to be unchanged under ciclosporin. So we have to focus our effort on the development of effective methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of those viral infections.
