Music interventions mitigate moderate migration issues
Abstract:
While migration issues are often seen together with severe traumatisation, sociocultural aggression and delinquency, moderate psychological difficulties that are intrinsically associated with migration are underrepresented, both in research and in therapeutic practice. With regard to Chinese children, adolescents and adults (including those with parent-child relational difficulties) in Bavaria, the presMuent
article revolves around these problems and discusses effective support provided by therapeutically focused music education.
The Music Center Munich is a Chinese music school in the capital of Bavaria. In addition to usual tasks of a music school it is particularly dedicated to transcultural encounter and exchange, achievement of Chinese cultural proficiency, and music education-oriented support for developmental problems related to migration. Musich-based research identified complex psychosyndromes that are not primarily pathological but arise from difficult sociocultural conditions. These syndromes do not correspond to typical child and adolescent psychiatric diagnoses, but rather reflect diverse stressors.
In this context, six components, which can occur with varying intensity and combinations, were identified: (i) experiences of social exclusion, (ii) drifting into smartphone-addiction and pseudo-real cyberworlds, (iii) socioculturally specific deficits in self-identity, (iv) a complex language disorder referred to as polylingual withdrawal syndrome, (v) specific socioculturally influenced stress and anxiety manifestations, and (vi) typical as well as atypical depressive dynamics. Scientific monitoring of music education interventions in the form of action research led to the identification of six core principles of related health promotion: (a) aesthetic self-exploration, (b) musical-symbolic affective identity, (c) artistic-creative expression of inner processes, (d) creative interactions and group dynamics, (e) discovery and experience of artistic-creative flow, and (f) multifactorial as well as multimodal self-actualisation. Application of these principles in music education processes not only led to a significant reduction in symptoms, but above all to the expansion of personality and poly-culturally competent self-identity.
