Brain asymmetry and stress: New perspectives in psychophysiologically oriented psychosomatic research
Ilona Papousek, Günter Schulter

Summary
Linking findings of laterality research on stress, emotion, and cortical-autonomic regulation with modern approaches of psychosomatic research may open up new paths for the understanding of some of the mechanisms through which psychological processes (chronic stress and negative emotion) affect physical well-being. In the present article, we briefly review the theoretical background and findings of some recent studies performed in our laboratory that support this integrative approach.

Key words: stress, hemispheric asymmetry, psychophysiology, psychosomatics, EEG, EDA
