Integrative in-patient therapy for eating disorders

This contribution describes the in-patient treatment of females with the eating disorders Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa at the University Medical Clinic in Heidelberg. As an introduction the diagnostic criteria and the clinical picture of how illness comes about are presented; basic epidemiological data and multifactorial aetiology together with their implications for treatment are alluded to. After the presentation of the body of knowledge as it stands at the moment together with the newest developments in therapeutic beginnings and the internal therapeutic concept of the psycho-somatic-psychotherapeutic ward. In the case of eating disorders the general concept of a ward encompasses psycho-educative and cognitive elements as well as behavior-therapeutic and family-therapeutic elements in the context of a psycho-dynamic background. These varying components of treatment give rise to the fact that within a therapeutic team the processes of integration and understanding - extending beyond the boundaries of particular schools of thought - will always be necessary. The contribution concludes with the description of results of examinations of catamneses together with an indication of prospects for the future.
