The present paper investigates the degree to which the motivation to communicate is influenced by the variables uncertainty and importance. After having reviewed a number of social psychological theories implementing these variables, an integrative model will be spelled out. It is assumed that the combination of uncertainty and importance elicits two interwoven responses: (1) establishing a particular viewpoint, and (2) communicating this viewpoint. The goal of communication out of uncertainty is to gain social reality for the viewpoint and, as a consequence, to reduce the state of uncertainty. The various aspects of this notion will be illustrated by empirical examples. The motivational background and further research questions will be discussed.
Keywords: communication, uncertainty
