The questionnaire for the assessment of state and trait anxiety STAI and Beck's depression questionnaire were administered to two groups of subjects (refugees and non-refugees from war-stricken areas). Each group consisted of 72 subjects. The obtained results showed significant differences in the level of anxiety and depressive reactions between the groups. There was a high anxiety level in the refugees caused by the direct danger to life. This group showed, in the form of acute anxiety reaction, separation anxiety with depressive equivalents, which was connected with the loss of home, social and cultural environment which had been emotionally built up for a long time.
