The preparatory psychological programme applied during a training course organized for Croatian soldiers serving on the territory of Rijeka and its surroundings was initiated in October 1991. It mainly included high rank military officers. The course combined theory and on the spot work in small size groups. The theory was supposed to give the officers some basis for the initial part of the training, while the group work was meant to make them understand group phenomena. Groups were led by group psychotherapists. The programme was being altered either to suite the available time or psychical profile of officers. Thus created preliminary work made it possible even to recognize a specific group culture or that of an individual taking part in such a group. It also enabled detection of some officers who could have been characterized as problematic ones, and, at the same time, it was extremely useful in the later work on the spot, and further therapeutic management.
Keywords: soldiers, group phenomena
