ICSC 2000
International Conference on Spatial Cognition
Scientific Research and Applications

Rome 14 – 16 December, 2000

The aim of the conference is to bring together leading scientists working on spatial cognition with a balance between basic and applied research. The conference will favour integration across disciplines and methodologies, by grouping presentations under major themes that are central to the understanding of spatial cognition.
The format of the meeting will involve two parallel types of presentations: scientific sessions with internationally renowned speakers and exhibitions of prototypes deriving from applied research aiming at overcoming perceptual and motor deficits.

Invited speakers are:

-         Michel Denis, Paris,  “Language and space: How to convey directional information in spatial discourse”

-         Hanspeter A. Mallot, Tuebingen, “ Mechanisms of spatial cognition in man and machine”

-         Jonathan Wolpaw, New York, “Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control”

Scientific Committee

The Scientific Committee includes Marta Olivetti Belardinelli (University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy), Niels Birbaumer (University of Tuebingen, Germany), Pasquale Calabrese (University of Bochum, Germany), Cesare Cornoldi (University of Padua, Italy), Francesco Saverio Marucci (University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy), Clelia Rossi Arnaud (University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy), Giancarlo Tanucci (University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy), Hubert Zimmer (Saarland University, Germany).

Web Site

Full details concerning the conference can be found on the Conference website: http://studens.psi.uniroma1.it/ICSC2000

Conference themes

Submissions relating to the following conference themes are encouraged, although other topics will be considered.

-         Spatial cognition and virtual reality

-         Visuo-spatial working memory

-         Auditory segregation and sound localization

-         Spatial learning

-         Individual differences in spatial abilities

-         Spatial communication

Types of contributions

Contributions are invited for symposia, oral papers, poster presentations and exhibitions of prototypes. A maximum of two submissions per person will be accepted.

-         ORAL PAPERS which will be held in the main conference room, will be grouped according to topic and will be followed by questions and discussion.

-         POSTERS will have designated time-slots assigned to them. They will have equal status to oral papers and will appear in the conference program and proceedings.

-         SYMPOSIA will consist of a set of integrated oral papers related to a theme. Each symposium will consist of one or two 2-hour-sessions, each involving up to five presentations.

-         PROTOTYPE EXHIBITIONS will concern all possible applications of scientific data aiming at overcoming perceptual and motor deficits.

Deadlines

The deadline for submission is JULY 20, 2000. Acceptance will be notified by SEPTEMBER 20, 2000.

Proceedings

Abstracts will be published as a special supplement of Cognitive Processing – International Quarterly of Cognitive Sciences (http://www.cognitive-processing.com) Selected contributions will be invited to submit an extended paper to the journal. The abstract-book will be included in the congress-fee.
